The largest contribution of emissions in the Austrian agriculture sector stem from the enteric fermentation of cattle/cows that leads to methane (CH4) emissions. The most important driver for agricultural greenhouse gas emissions is therefore the overall population of cows.

Other large emission sources are the management of organic fertilizer (manure) and the overall fertilization of agricultural soils with nitrogen, both resulting in the emission of nitrous oxides (N2O), which has a high global warming potential of 265 (IPCC2013).

Also attributed to the Agriculture sector are energy-related emissions in the sector, which result from mobile machinery and stationary combustion.
